Heads up! This newsletter is more than a year old. Links may be out of date or lead to unexpected places, or the context may have changed. Please handle with care.
Hello!
It's another three-video week, and — thankfully, if I'm honest! — the last one for a while. But that means that this week:
It's another three-video week, and — thankfully, if I'm honest! — the last one for a while. But that means that this week:
- On the Technical Difficulties, Matt gets angry at some clay.
- On Plus, I've never ridden a horse, but we're trying jousting anyway.
- And then on the old channel, the video that's just launched as this newsletter's sent out: this 400-year-old festival has the world's largest walking robot.
Elsewhere in the world of video this week:
- Sabine Hossenfelder's video is titled "Advil, Aspirin, and Tylenol: what's the difference?", but it covers so much more than that, including a load of stuff about the causes of pain that I just didn't know. This is definitely worth a watch.
- An untranslatable Dutch word: "gunnen".
- I thought some of my one-take, this-must-go-perfectly shots were difficult, but Tessa Violet's video for "Bad Ideas" has one particular risky shot that actually made me gasp out loud. You'll know it when you see it. (And the music's good, too.)
Other interesting links I've found this week:
- An incredibly niche British reference that will land for only a few people: in 1975, Bill Oddie released a version of "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at", as a style parody of Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends". It's all there: the overblown guitar chords, the backing singers, the wailing vocals. Incredible
work.
- You may have seen the wonderful videos of Emmanuel the Emu this week: Emmanuel's owner's account continues to be one of the few bright spots in the hellhole that is Twitter. Here's an interview with Emmanuel, and with his owner Taylor.
- How Checkers Was Solved is a fascinating article that's ostensibly about Chinook, which was to checkers (UK: draughts) what Deep Thought was to chess. It's really a story about people, well told, and it's worth a read.
- A Casio F91 old-school digital watch, converted into a smartwatch.
All the best,
— Tom
