A mothballed airport terminal, and I get mugged off.

Heads up! This newsletter is more than two years old. Links may be out of date or lead to unexpected places, or the context may have changed. Please handle with care.
Hello!
This Sunday, the South Terminal at Gatwick Airport will reopen: and it turns out that mothballing an entire airport terminal is more difficult than you might think. And over on Tom Scott plus, I tried to make a mug, but I couldn't handle it.

Elsewhere in video this week:
- Colin Furze's secret tunnel is complete! Well, at least the first part of it is, and it shows off his status as master of the build montage. This is one of the most successful long-running series I've seen on YouTube.
- An interesting video piece explaining research into giant waves on container ships. It's very much a press release in video form, but the results and footage are worth watching.
- Tom Cardy continues to release brilliant short comedy songs: this time, human interaction — it's easy! (Note: this video is suitable for all, but there's often very strong language on that channel.)
- The first nine seconds of this TikTok video by Zara are incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a "previously on" that covered so much context in so little time. The rest of the video's fascinating as well, although I can't speak for its accuracy!
Other interesting links I've found this week:
- Artist Jeff Koons insists the sculpture is a fake. The courts disagree, and say he made it. This is one of those articles that could send you off down a rabbit-hole.
- The I Am Alexa Alliance might initially seem like a joke — and I'm still suspicious when there's actually a properly-formed company behind something like this, rather than just a petition or single Twitter account. But I can't deny that they make a good point.
- This article in Nature has been doing the rounds in a lot of the circles I'm in, summed up as "what happens if we just change the AI from 'help humans' to 'hurt humans'?"
- And finally, sent in anonymously after the science-fiction video last week: a story called Lily the Immortal. It does what I've never been able to do: take a concept, and add characters and emotion to make it human.
That "and finally" was a bit more bleak than usual. I'll try and find some cute animals for next week!
All the best,
— Tom
