A dangerous airport, and I'm defeated by sheep.

Heads up! This newsletter is more than two years old. Links may be out of date or lead to unexpected places, or the context may have changed. Please handle with care.
Hello!
This week, the second video from Madeira: how Europe's toughest airport landing used to be a lot harder. And over on the Plus channel, I tried herding sheep, and the sheep won.

While researching this week, I've also stumbled upon:
- Safiya Nygaard's 18th century makeover is fascinating, even for someone like me whose knowledge of fashion history is basically zero. I wonder if there'll be someone in another 250 years' time doing a "21st century makeover"?
- Japan's arcades are disappearing. I have fond memories of visiting Tokyo arcades when I was briefly there, a few years ago; I know things change, but I still think it's a shame.
- Why are restaurant vegetables better than home-cooked ones? The easy answer would be "they're cooked with a lot of fat and salt", but Ethan Chlebowski does a great job of showing that it's more complicated than that, along with actual experiments and tips for cooking at home.
- This clip from a German TV show is a masterpiece of production. You don't need to understand German: all you need to know is that the two players need to complete eight tasks in fifteen minutes. A math problem written on exercise equipment, hitching up a trailer, and so on. Except: if no-one's pressing the button in the middle of the floor, the clock runs at treble speed. And a lot of the tasks require two people. It sounds like it's going to be complicated, but the producers have done such a good job.
Elsewhere on the web this week, away from YouTube:
- Drones have transformed blood delivery in Rwanda. When this was being tested, there were some really good videos about the technology — and now the data's in, and it turns out it really does work. It's good to see a headline like this in the past tense.
- In 2020, a man accidentally ejected himself from a fighter jet. He didn't even really want to fly. He wasn't medically fit to fly. It's an incredible comedy of errors, and it's only a comedy because no-one was seriously hurt. If you can
read French (or use a translator), the original French report is worth reading.
- The Tunnel Under The World is 1955 science fiction that, with a few small changes, could have been an episode script for Black Mirror. To say more would spoil it.
Next week, I'm out of Madeira, and starting a run of videos from France!
— Tom
