Heads up! This newsletter is more than two years old. Links may be out of date or lead to unexpected places, or the context may have changed. Please handle with care.
Hello!
Before this week's links: I promised, a long time ago, that this newsletter would also be a place to launch new secret projects. And while this one's a bit underwhelming at the moment: I've got a favour to ask!
I'm starting a new project. (Yes, another. Yes, I know.) And it'd be really helpful if you could subscribe to this new YouTube channel! There's nothing there yet, not even a description, and there won't be for months. But having subscribers on a channel unlocks some YouTube features that are going
to be really handy for if (when?) that finally launches.
Which leads me on to this week's existing projects!
- Over on my old channel, I visited the Yellowstone Zone of Death.
- And on the Technical Difficulties, I fulfilled a childhood dream!
And I also made a guest appearance on the Safety Third podcast with William Osman, Allen Pan, and NileRed. (Contains occasional strong language and adult references.)
Research this week hasn't found many videos, but slacking off definitely has:
- Zack and Cambry from JerryRigEverything investigate the world's most advanced wheelchair. Which is good: but at $40,000, it does feel like there's a lot more room for innovation and improvement here.
- From 2008: raw footage from the music video shoot for "Weird Al" Yankovic's "White and Nerdy", in which Donny Osmond improvises three minutes of wildly confident dancing, including the ASL for ROTFLOL.
- On Instagram, a stunning aerial timelapse of a storm supercell. I cannot do these 59 seconds justice in words: this is unbelievable flying, camerawork and editing.
Other interesting links I've found this week:
- The Wikipedia article for Authentic Brands Group surprised me: a big corporation that buys up brand names, along with the image rights to alive and dead celebrities, seems like something out of a dystopian novel.
- In an article that will resonate very much for Brits of a certain age, the unexpected links between ChuckleVision and Red Dwarf. It's worth reading just for the final section, which somehow manages to both be a brilliant fact and a punchline.
- Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld’s paintings are inside the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Gallery at at the newly renamed Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum. Turns out if you have enough money, you can just get your own art gallery.
All the best,
— Tom
