Hello!
For the first time in a bit too long, there's only one video from me this week, which honestly might just be a bit of a breather. In the second post-related video in a row, I delivered mail by jumping from a moving boat!
For the first time in a bit too long, there's only one video from me this week, which honestly might just be a bit of a breather. In the second post-related video in a row, I delivered mail by jumping from a moving boat!
But don't worry if that's not enough, because there's plenty of other
stuff elsewhere on YouTube that I've found this week:
- Laura Try tells how she rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. It's not a modern-style vlog, it's just someone telling their story, but I think
it's absolutely worth a watch.
- Beau Miles kayaks the sickest urban river in Australia. That's "sick" as in "polluted", just to be clear. (Some moderate language.)
- Todd in the Shadows tells the story of the Macarena. (Some strong language.) Yes, this is one of those video essays where someone's spent a long time Googling and is presenting their research, but it's a good story, well told. As a side note? I never
actually learned the Macarena.
- And Stuff Made Here tries to build a jigsaw-solving robot. I thought that'd be a difficult challenge, but it's even harder than I'd imagine.
And from the rest of the internet:
- The Ugly War over Bob Ross' ghost. Bob Ross was one of those American cultural icons
that I only knew via the internet; this is a long-read about the legal battles about his image, and the people caught up in them.
- They're not meant to be taken seriously, and hopefully no-one does, but: Carlo
Cipolla's tongue-in-cheek laws of human stupidity stuck out to me as being an interesting personality test: how much do you help yourself, and how much do you help others? And can you work to increase both?
- Disney World is built in a Florida swamp. Why do you almost never get bitten by mosquitos there?
And finally, I can't believe I've never seen this Tennis Balls skit before. From 2013, it's a Saturday Night Live digital short ("digital short"! there's a term that seems outdated). It mocks all the cable-channel hyper-produced "wow! science! amazing!" shows that were taking over the airwaves then. Comedy's always subjective, but it turns out that mixing highbrow style parody and a lot of lowbrow slapstick really makes me laugh.
That's it for this week. Next week: not a video about the postal service, I promise.
All the best,
— Tom
