Deci-America, a piano, and a jalgorithm.

Hello!
It's been a rainy and grey week in London, and I've been catching up with everything I wasn't able to do during the weeks of filming Jet Lag and Lateral. Speaking of which! This week on Lateral, it's the return of Abby Cox, Matt Gray and Iszi Lawrence, facing questions about availability apps, nitpicking nightclubs and handy hairspray.

What have I found on YouTube this week?
- The Piano Doctor cleans a
public piano in Chicago O'Hare airport. That description undersells the video a little: it's fascinating to see the process, the number of parts that need to be cleaned, and the detail work that goes into it. There's a pleasant, calm voiceover explaining the process too. (Thanks to Dave for sending this over!)
- The Second (strong language) is the first fictional narrative short by the team behind film-analysis channel Every Frame A Painting. It's a strong directorial debut — which is what you'd hope for from people who analyse the medium in such depth. The upside of having that reputation and following is that plenty of people are watching the short; I wouldn't have found it otherwise.
The downside, of course, is that a good portion of those viewers will be paying more attention to the directorial decisions than the actual story itself.
- James Bruton makes an Omni-Directional Ball-Wheeled Bike. This video has
absolutely crushed it this week, with millions of views, for good reason: it's a very complicated build that James makes look almost effortless, and an end result that almost everyone watching will want to try.
And here's what I've found away from the world of video:
- When American grocery store and pharmacy Walgreens replaced the glass doors of its refrigerators with giant screens, the idea was widely mocked. Good news for those who enjoy mocking terrible ideas: it ended up as a $200 million disaster.
- You've heard of Null Island? Well, near Null Island, there's Deci-America.
(Scroll down for Centi-America.)
- And a book recommendation! I'm slightly late to this, but I just finished Micaiah Johnson's The Space Between Worlds (UK edition; US edition. Those are Amazon affiliate links, I get a cut). It's one of those rare sci-fi books that takes a concept, runs with it, and then keeps running, adding what-if on top of what-if. Every time I thought I'd figured out where the plot was going, it went there, revealed that mystery... and then started going somewhere else. Recommended.
And finally: a jalgorithm for japplying jeans to jobjects. (Thanks to Suntooth for sending this over!)
All the best,
— Tom
