A large crossing and a tiny van!

Hello!
Right then, straight into it: another week, another list of good stuff I've found around the internet. But first up, of course: a new episode of Lateral! Kip Heath, Carson Woody and Ólafur Waage face questions about instrumental impairments, alcohol advertisements and museum measurements.
Right then, straight into it: another week, another list of good stuff I've found around the internet. But first up, of course: a new episode of Lateral! Kip Heath, Carson Woody and Ólafur Waage face questions about instrumental impairments, alcohol advertisements and museum measurements.
And on to YouTube, where I've found:
- Tanner visits the longest railroad crossing in Japan, where the barriers can be down for nearly an hour at busy times, as train after train
after train passes by. I can only assume that everyone who lives nearby must be deaf to the sounds of the crossing alarms. (Yes, I'm surprised I didn't know about this before, let alone make a video about it when I was in Japan!)
- Ogmios tests out a new electric golf cart hire service in London. Which wouldn't be much of a video if it weren't for the unconventional narration added in post: almost whispering, close up to the microphone, with a manner and intonation that sounds like a combination between meditation guru and stand-up comedian. Which makes sense, given the rest of
Ogmios’ channel includes the "School of Zen Motoring", and that his history includes battle rap and comedy.
- TLP250H has built a tiny electric cart that runs and sounds like an electric train! What a lovely little project. The video has no narration, but there are full English subtitles to explain what's going on in the Japanese text. (The motor is pushed beyond its design specs so it sounds better!) And if you'd like to know why it sounds musical: another channel, Denki Otaku explains in technical detail, and builds a similar motor.
What about away from video? Well:
- Where's London's most central sheep? Diamond Geezer investigates — and then follows up with a sheepish apology.
Diamond Geezer has been blogging about London, mostly about transport and infrastructure, for more than twenty years; there's a huge amount to explore in the archives, and I'd recommend having a look around if you know anything about the city.
- Global
Caps Lock: download the software, then your caps lock key will synchronise with all the other users' caps lock keys. This is the latest project by Nolen of eieio, who appears to be one of the last bastions of making fun web toys just because you can. And given his previous experience with one million checkboxes
(some strong language), I fully expect someone to have hacked this and turned it into some sort of automated, error-correcting messaging system by the end of the week. To quote Nolen: "the internet can still be fun". (Thanks to several people who sent this over!)
- Bluejeweled is a mod for the classic Match-3 game Bejeweled, designed to "add more blue", and playable entirely in-browser. If you ever played the original Bejeweled, you will absolutely want to play through this, for laughter and for catharsis. There are nine classic levels, and each is different. (Strong
language and spoilers in the comments.)
And finally: a tiny van goes for a tiny drive.
All the best,
— Tom
